I’m a writer and a linguist. I created New Word Wall as a place for both parts of that work: linguistic research, essays, field notes, and writing concerned with language, culture, technology, place, and the experience of being human.

Some pieces begin with a linguistic observation and develop into research. Others begin with an image, experience, argument, or question and become essays. The distinction is useful, but not absolute: writing is one way I conduct inquiry, and language is often present even when it is not the stated subject.
